I use it for syncronizing my Yojimbo database across my iMac and MacBook by putting the Library/Application Support/Yojimbo folder into dropbox and making a softlink (aliases don't seem to work) in its place. Works very well, though I'm careful to make sure Yojimbo is only open on one or the other. Not sure what would happen with them both open.

An Alias is done through Finder (select file and Cmd-L). A soft link is done at the Unix/Terminal level with the ln command. I would have thought behind the scenes Apple would use softlinks for Aliases, but it appears they don't.

Just want to chime in and tell you how much I love this service. I might not use it for any "unusual" uses, but the ability to access my docs on my desktop, laptop, and work computer with little to no effort has been an answer to my prayers. I've used other similar services, but all require tedious upkeep. Dropbox just works!
I've got my wife set up with it now too, so we can easily share family files and such. This will be an incredible benefit when I'm deployed overseas.

I use dropbox with a couple programms visual studio, jingproject, and my localwebbrowser being just a couple. Love the service but I would want to run it on my server with my space and my servers and ... ALL MINE :P

For as what I have seen in Demo, I would be interested in Dropbox professionally - I work for an ISP that would probably be very interested in providing such a service to our customers....

Just like the other replies here, I signed up nearly a month ago, and still no invite. I wouldn't mind except the UK magazine 'Mac Format' has an article on using Dropbox to sync files across several Macs.....they imply you just have to visit this website and then you can create an accout right away!!! I feel its not only misleading, but rubbing salt into those of us still waiting and waiting......

I've been on the beta wait list since March 12 and am still very interested to test out the service. I'm not sure where else to ask this question so I hope it is OK to do so here.
What I would like to do with the service is to replace iDisk in our small business. We have 1 iDisk account that all of us (6 or 7 folks) share for our common documents/templates. If 2 of us were to change a document in our DropBox folder on our machines at the same time, how would the service handle synching this?
I can't wait to get into the beta to see if this will work for us so we can drop this stinking iDisk.

I use it for all my files, but one of the most useful has been to sync all my scripts/code with all my pcs/laptops. It's easier than using svn/cvs etc and I don't need all the features they offer so it's perfect for me.

I signed up for beta on April 9th. Waited some and decided to wait by trying others. My trials are over. Allthough they weren't beta they seemed more beta than Dropbox. And Im still waiting for this beta. At least please mail those who sign up, their order so we shall estigmate how much we have to wait. I really want to be a participant in beta testers. I want to test, report, feature request. Do what a tester should do.

How did the guy get the webcam to dump video into Dropbox? I tried Yawcam, but it didn't work too well, either the software wasn't responsive enough, or my webcam is rubbish (probably this one!). What software did he use? Thanks.

oh my god, after i installed Dropbox at my macbook OSX 10.5(with updated patches), the Finder behave strange....it become lag - very slow in reaction. did anyone experience?? i erase Dropbox & problem still there. more strange is that the launcher bar, other programs are fine but just the Finder becoming like a turtle.... pls help!!!
Simon - Check your account settings and see if you've got "include me in buggier releases" checked. I had checked this about 3 weeks ago, and it seems I had similar problems with whatever was flying around the super-beta version for the last 2 weeks. I could not nail down what *exactly* was going on, except that dropbox super-beta would push CPU up to 95%, or seize up finder when syncing new files to the cloud.
Remember this is still beta software, so there are little bugs that get by the devs, who in turn are looking to us to help them bug-squash. :)
Back to your problem - if your account settings show that you're accepting buggier releases and those bugs are becoming a hinderance to productivity, think about un-checking it. I usually accept super-beta versions unless I'm doing some hardcore sharing with my thesis advisor, who doesn't really like dealing with beta testing as much as I do ;)

I signed up for the beta quite a while ago as I was (and still am) keen to try out the Dropbox service. So what is delaying access to the service? If it is funding then with the level of interest that you have I am pretty sure there are plenty of people out there who would be happy to pay a small monthly fee to help get the service online even as a Beta.
I look forward to hopefully getting the chance to review dropbox some time soon...

Ahh feels great to enjoy those 5GBs. I have coupled Dropbox to Backup.app on my Macbook Pro. All I have to say is that Apple better announce a total revamp of .Mac tomorrow or Dropbox will have taken it over...
BTW, i'd love to hear about your premium prices one of these days, I kind of plan to upgrade.

I've been trying to get my Quickbooks file on My Dropbox so that I can access it from both work and home computer. Having a problem opening the file once it's been moved to my dropbox. Any ideas why, or if there's an easy fix I'm not seeing? It's working great for files in other programs - excel, word. Keep up the good work guys - this is a product many of us are thankful for!

When I first heard about this project, I thought wow, that could be usefull. Then I was thinking: but what about privacy? Aren't those Dropboy guys able to see all my files? Looking at this post, it seems they can - and they already did. Evenmore: they post about what they saw in their blog. Like private photos and chatlogs and faxes and webcam recordings. I'm shocked!!! What about privacy?

hi marc, we're working on allowing user-provided private keys so that data can be encrypted client-side with any key of choice. at the moment, this encryption is done server-side. that said, dropbox employees don't have access to user data.

yup, we actually recommend this in our FAQ. dropbox only sends the deltas, so changes to the truecrypt volume are synced very efficiently.

You can move that Logs folder to your DropBox in Finder then in Terminal do:
ln -s ~/Dropbox/Logs ~/Library/Application\ Support/Adium\ 2.0/Users/Default/Logs
to create a softlink to it.

If I wanted to share my photos with my grand parents, will dropbox handle over 5 gigs of photos?
