I wish it didn't require OS 3.1. It caused major battery and signal issues for me, so I downgraded back to 3.0.1
  • kitus · 3 months ago
Same here with the issues above. May a future update unlock 3.0 and above usage?
  • SpyBot · 3 months ago
Me too. Also there is no *snow tool for 3.1 and I cannot live without JB :(

I hope they will (re?)considered the release of a 2.x or 3.x version of the Dropbox App ... Otherwise, they cut down 77% of iPhone's users.

    http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/09/ad-da...

    2.x = 26%
    3.0 = 51%
    3.1 = 23%
  • Frank · 3 months ago
Please revise it so it can be used under OS 3.01.
  • sergio2 · 3 months ago
Exactly what I want to say!
I wait for this app long time and now I can't use it. Sad.
  • Eric · 3 months ago
Sometimes things happen that make absolutely NO sense....this app requiring OS 3.1 is one of those things. Really guys??? There are some of us that pay attention to what the various OS versions do to our iPhones and I, for one, cannot afford to have my OS eat my battery - so I'm not using OS 3.1. I'm assuming you developed this even before the new OS came out so there's NO reason for it.....unless Apple is making you, which I wouldn't put past them at this point. So, out with it. What's up with this?!?!?

    Only 3.1? Comme on
  • Drea @ Dropbox Support · 3 months ago
The choice to go with 3.1 was because of a limitation with 3.0.1. Under 3.0.1 if you record video from within the Dropbox app that video couldn't be saved to your iPhone photos directory, so if your upload was interrupted for any reason the video would be lost. With 3.1 we can save the video to your photos on the phone, so if the upload fails you still have a copy and can attempt to upload again.

My apologies for the inconvenience, but when it comes to data loss, we always have to aim for the safest option.
  • atrophic · 3 months ago
Thanks for the disclosure, but I'll have to join with the others saying we're glad to see it released, but disappointed that we can't use it on 3.0. I'd even be happy with a version that didn't have video recording over no version at all.
  • rpetrich · 3 months ago
Seriously? It's not that difficult to check if the function is available at runtime and disable video features if necessary.

    Example Code: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1364056/SaveVideoAtP...
  • stiki101 · 3 months ago
I agree with having a warning for people on 3.0.1. I'm willing to put up with such an issue in order to get dropbox on my iPhone without having to update to the latest firmware.

I can't afford to get my iPhone locked to carrier when I travel all the time and am constantly changing SIM cards.

Dropbox is one of the best services I've come across in a LONG time. I actually pay for the 50GB plan and am constantly raving about it to friends and co-workers. Keep up the good work guys!
  • Name · 3 months ago
    I won't be upgrading to 3.1

sorry, dropbox, I love your tools, but this is horrible, requiring me to go to a broken OS so I can use software.
  • DigitalAddict · 3 months ago
    I could cry... :|

How about just a splash warning screen on first launch for those of us with 3.0/3.0.1 ? With a very specific limitation like that, I'd gladly "roll the dice".
  • boioglu · 3 months ago
what about iPhone 2G? I can't shoot video with that one? Why do i have to upgrade to 3.1?

    this is so disappointing.
  • belgrado65 · 3 months ago
I agree. I am on 2G as well. No video so why should I go to 3.1?
I have a free account (2G) and was ready to subscribe for 50GB but now...I will not.
Sorry guys great tool you have out there but you are losing customers on your limitation.
  • Walter · 3 months ago
Ooops. I cannot install it because of iphone 3.1 restriction. Nevertheless, I WILL NOT upgrade my iphone to 3.1 !
  • Name · 3 months ago
Sounds like 2 versions are necessary 3.0 and 3.1. It seems that there are most dropbox users here with OS3.0 compared with 3.1. Many people can not upgrade to 3.1 because of very important features that jailbreaking provides. It is my opinion that people without jailbroken iPhones only have half an iPhone, and iPhone is only good because of jailbreaking. An OS with less restrictions. Skype over 3G saves me about $50 a month something that non Jailbroken phones can't do.
  • christian · 3 months ago
Not really. Your perception is off because 3.0-users will complain most. All the 3.1-users are happily droppoxing all over the place and have no need to whine here.
  • stiki101 · 3 months ago
Some of us just don't have a choice, we can't upgrade to 3.1 because we will
be locked to a provider. I bought the phone and I would like to be able to
use it with any provider I wish.
  • greenlight · 3 months ago
Maybe you ought to have bought an unlocked phone instead of complaining. That's what I did and I can upgrade all I want and install whatever.

Don't support the locked phone hegemony by giving them money - buy unlocked.
  • aarond10ster · 3 months ago
I really really really want this but alas I am also on 3.0.1 and can't use it.

Pretty please take that video upload code out and recompile for us 3.0 people! As someone else stated, we make up 50% of your iPhone using customer base right now.
  • flonux · 3 months ago
Support for 3.0.1 please. Thanks. And great job
  • Mark · 3 months ago
Dropbox or tethering? Sorry but Dropbox loses this one.

I understand the reasoning, but why not have it run on all devices 3.0 and over, and just disable the video upload feature if the user doesn't have 3.1?

After all, video doesn't even concern the huge amount of 3G (or original iPhone) owners out there anyway.
  • Kevin · 3 months ago
jep… tethering wins… sorry guys… but i dont even have the option to upload video (iPhone 3G) and there is no way i will update to 3.1… because this update is basically a downgrade and i need tethering enabled because my stupid provider will not even think about "enabling" this feature on my contract…

i really hope you will release an updated version of the dropbox app that runs on 3.0.1 and ignores the video upload problem on 2G and 3G phones.
  • danygeller · 3 months ago
3.1 only ?!?!?!?!? Please I have 3.0 because of OBVIOUS REASONS...

I'm a paying Dropbox customer and, please, release a 3.0 version....

Aw, too bad 3.1 is needed - which I don't want to get yet. What's the special features in the app that's coming from 3.1?

Anyway, I'm sure the app is great. Congrats.
  • Name · 3 months ago

  • Greg C · 3 months ago
Nice, but why does the button link to the dropbox iphone app page and not just go directly to iTunes?
  • leftyfb · 3 months ago
    Was the 3.1 requirement necessary?
  • jamesaguilar · 3 months ago
Oh no! I can't use this because I still want to tether. :P Maybe iPhone 4.0 will have enough cool new features to get me to upgrade even though I give up tethering, but 3.1 won't do it. So alas, no dropbox on iPhone for me.
  • fadetowhite · 3 months ago

  • Mark McElroy · 3 months ago
Perfect. Amazing. Awesome. Works like a charm, and is far better and more reliable at pulling in data quickly (and saving it rapidly for local access, when I favorite something) than Evernote. Cleaner and faster than OneDisk. I LOVE THIS!

Thank you. Thank you thank you thank you.

TO THE WHINY 3.0.1 folks: I upgraded my phone to 3.1 ages ago, and I've not had any issues with battery life, even with aggressive daily use of the phone. Rather than whining about Dropbox using the latest and greatest, get with the program and update your darn phones.
  • Name · 3 months ago
    To Mark McElroy:

you may have upgraded your phone to 3.1 ages ago, but there are many, MANY of us who cannot or will not upgrade to 3.1.

Don't call us whiny when we make up over 50% of the iphone user base.
  • Nobo · 3 months ago
@Name: That's nonsense. Just because you "make up over 50% of the iPhone user base" won't make your argument better. Tell me, why CAN'T you upgrade to 3.1? This is a question of time. If you won't upgrade, future apps won't work too. And you'll be complaining the first 2 months about OS 3.1. Or about missing functions - but hey, you didn't want the upgrade.

Stop crying about the rules of using the Dropbox Application. If you doesn't meet the requirements: Upgrade. If you won't: Don't use the app.
    Easy, huh?
  • DigitalAddict · 3 months ago
Congratulations. You can obviously live without jailbreaking, unlocking, teathering, cydia, 3g unrestriction, 5 icon dock, backgrounding apps, sbsettings, winterboard, iRealQuickSMS or any number of other "features" that are *not* possible with 3.1 on many devices. For many of us it's an easy call, but we don't have to like it. Especially when it was done for a pretty limited edge case senario that could have been avoided in other ways for 3.0 users, who are still the majority.
  • rich · 3 months ago
For many it's easier to live without Dropbox than it is to live with OS 3.1, hence Dropbox loses out.
  • Name · 3 months ago
    Hi Nobo,

I'm so glad you can use iphone os 3.1. I'm not complaining about missing functions, or about the first two months of OS 3.1.

It is easy. I won't be installing dropbox until they make a 3.x-compatible version.
  • Paul Irish · 3 months ago
    <whine whine whine whine whine>

    3.0.1 support plz THX
  • dantes · 3 months ago
Yeah, my 3.1 works great, too. Screw you guys who had the good sense to wait while a very buggy OS is sorted so you could be sure it would work properly on your phones!

Down with this sort of thing.
  • dispy · 3 months ago
checked itunes everyday to findout if it was released. Really disappointed. why 3.1? only 20% of users have updated to 3.1. snif snif :( will someone crack it to make it work with 3.0?
  • DigitalAddict · 3 months ago
Hacking it would take some work. You can install it on 3.x with simple change in the info.plist file, however the app won't launch, presumably from some 3.1 sdk code. :(
  • Mario · 3 months ago
    Support for 3.0.1 please. Thanks.
  • morozgrafix · 3 months ago
I was looking forward to this app, tried to get ti but it requires 3.1 which i'm staying away from at this point. DropBox App = EPIC FAIL for now.
  • DigitalAddict · 3 months ago
Please, please, please make it 3.x and not 3.1 only. Less people are on 3.1 then you might think, for a wide variety of reasons.

I will re-name my son Dropbox once it installs on 3.x.
  • harry | GoalsOnTrack · 3 months ago
looks pretty cool. keep up the good work.:-)
  • No Love · 3 months ago
Another vote for 3.x. I'm running 3.0.1 so I can tether my phone, and frankly, that's more important than the Dropbox app for me (and many, many others).
  • SD · 3 months ago
Thanks for the hard work in developing the app (and getting through the iTunes store bureaucracy!!

    Keep up the good work.

I wish the comments were more positive... Maybe if there'd been warning about the OS 3.1 restriction people wouldn't be so up in arms...
  • continentalop · 3 months ago
The app aside, I loved reading this post in my RSS reader. Hilariously brilliant.
  • kulturhack · 3 months ago
    Hi Dropbox World Headquarters:

I'm an avid Dropbox user--many times a day you folks backup and track changes to my novel-in-progress.

So forgive me if I can't wrap my head around what the official iPhone app does that setting up a Dropbox bookmark on an iPhone launch page--particularly one pointing to the iPhone-optmized version of the Dropbox site. In terms of show changes to Dropbox files, the bookmark seems to be *more* powerful. This isn't a rhetorical question-- what app advantage am I missing?
  • sastian · 3 months ago

  • Juvenn Woo · 3 months ago

  • Laith Al-Hashimi · 3 months ago
When will you people stop messing about with less important tasks like Guitar Hero and Iphone apps and start to release what have been promised for over a year now. To have the functionality of using any folder in any location in a system and not only your dropbox folder?

Really been waiting to start pay for the service but I'm loosing my patience as others are I can imagine.
  • DigitalAddict · 3 months ago
Are you using OSX? You can use symbolic links to drop folders where you please.
  • Brett · 3 months ago
Wow! Glad to see I'm not the only one disappointed at the 3.1 requirement. The blog had completely wet my appetite so I jumped when I saw it, only to be denied.

Since I don't even have a phone, just a lowly iPod touch, having a 3.1 requirement because of a feature I don't even have is doubly frustrating.
  • markedup · 3 months ago
lol, I'm on 3.1 and I love it. Totally worth just updating to 3.1 for all you people complaining ;)

I did notice one bug, when I open an mp3 in my dropbox in portrait mode it makes the display landscape but in portrait so the sides end up being chopped off. It might just be some configuration issue of mine though.

edit: it only does this when the device is flat on it's back on a table.
  • ups5 · 3 months ago
It's fantastic that it is on IPhone:) But when It will be on Android?
  • Thomas · 3 months ago

I could hardly await the dropbox iphone app. Now that it's out, I won't be able to install because I will not upgrade to IPSW 3.1! I am so sorry. But I do prefer a stable iPhone, and I don't dare IPSW 3.1. Sorry!!!

  • DAJ · 3 months ago
Thanks guys, an awesome app. It is unfair to be criticised for not supporting versions earlier that 3.1 of the iPhone. It's not your fault that Apple have a problem with the core O/S and battery life.

    BIG THUMBS UP FROM ME
  • Steve Rumsby · 3 months ago
Don't suppose it will make any difference, and given how long it took to get this app approved by Apple it certainly won't make a difference any time soon, but like many others here I've been avoiding 3.1 for lots of different reasons. I'd really rather not upgrade - I'm holding out for 3.1.1 in the hopes that it will fix all the issues people are seeing with 3.1. That could be a while though, especially until a jailbreak for 3.1.1 appears.

    Very frustrating...

  • nsfw · 3 months ago
How bout releasing the app as open source so we can compile it and launch it on Cydia? There can't be too much secret sauce in an rsync app.
  • bec · 3 months ago
Hmm, DropBox is not *just* an rsync app. AFAIK it uses hashing and coordinates client and server-side event queues rather than just file dating, like a versioning system but working in real-time. The logic of that part isn't so hard to understand--search/read the forums to find out how it works. You could probably write your own. However, the developers of DropBox have done an excellent job making it fast and effective, so why not just pay them!?
  • dakira · 3 months ago
Hm. 3.1 is a nogo for me since my company jailbreaks the iphone because we need to run custom software on our iphones. So no upgrade to 3.1.

Look DB staff, people that use DB tend to be "power users," if I may say such buzz words. Those same users are sticking to 3.0 until AT&T releases tethering or until a 3rd party 3.1 compatible profile with tethering comes along. Please release a version that will turn off said video feature on 3.0.
