Dropbox Blog: Hello world!

  • David Chartier · 1 year ago
It would certainly be great to hear more from y'all on how the service is doing or what happens when there is a service outage like there seemed to be this morning. You obviously don't have to give away any secrets, but a blog like this is a fantastic way to communicate with your users and (some day?) customers.

Consider that a blog is a vehicle for communication, I'll agree with others that it's a little unnerving to not hear anything for over three months now.

That said, keep up the great work. I just got in and I'm including Dropbox in a piece I'm writing. Love the service so far.

  • stan · 1 year ago
No posts after 12/18/07? That's not a good sign.

How is this service different from FolderShare?
  • Deano · 1 year ago
From the video it looks a whole lot easier to use than Foldershare. Foldershare worked but way too complex for the average user.
  • Deano · 1 year ago
I hope they update soon because this does look very promising. Haven't had my beta invite yet though.

Awesome idea, I've a bunch of computers that all share my data, (2 x pc laptop, Asus EeePc, eMac and PC's at the school I teach in), so this will be a god send!.

Yep, I agree with others that Foldershare is a similar idea but do we want our digital assets owned by one of the big firm. Comanies like Google & WinHoo's, ( YaDows if you prefer..), are starting to choose for us how things WILL be done, I'm not sure i like that. Facebook was free once...

Isn't it refreshing to have some real entrepreneur's having a bash at something new. Add to this the idea is simple & appears to work, well that's Icing on the Cake!

Keep up the good work chaps!

    Cheers

  • benjaminvanderbeken · 1 year ago
This looks amazing! It's so what is needed, and could not even dreamt of the ease of use of your idea. If you pull this off it will open a whole new way of working

I love this product! I have Dropbox installed on two OSX Macs, one Vista, and two XPs, and it works just as described. I'm sure I'm only scratching the surface of the capabilities, but if I save a document into my public dropbox on any of the machines, I can retrieve that version of the doc from any of my other machines , just by opening the file. Apparently I can also do retrievals via a web interface, but I haven't got around to trying that yet. I've been wanting to be able to do this for years. No more uploading files to some server just in case I'll need one of the files on some other system. I anticipate keeping all my documents in my dropbox so I can always get what I need from anywhere.

Keep up the good work, guys!
  • Bert · 1 year ago
    Hey Jim,
I'm glad to hear that it works well for you. I have some trouble with it, though. Perhaps you can solve the problem.
I installed the program, but when I clicked on "Link this computer to a Dropbox account," nothing happens. So my dropbox is not connected online and I can't do anything with it. Do you know what might have been the cause and how it could be fixed?
    Thank you for your time.

Hi,I've just registered, however when I tried to log on Dropbox it always requires me to enter betacode, which I don't kow where I can get it. I guess that I probably need to wait for the Email that tells the code.. right? I cann't wait to have Dropbox:-)

    Hi there,
I hope I might make a positive suggestion? As this is such a useful tool, and I can see that folks are waiting for this service to come online, I am sure those people whose e-mails have already been submitted would not mind if they were contacted by the company regarding when the product will actually become online? Just a thought.
    Best wishes,

Ever heard of rsync and svn? How is this innovative (Google drive killer), it has been in existance for many years ... The only difference is the online storage, but since privacy laws no longer exist in USA, why would someone place his secure documents using this utility.
  • David Chartier · 1 year ago
I think you're missing the typical customer that services like Dropbox is aimed at John. There's a ton of people out there who don't want to deal with command line tools, setting up their own hosting, and managing a system like SVN. I know what all these tools are and pay for my fair share of hosting, and even I don't want to deal with any of that stuff.

I've kept a .Mac account around for the iDisk and syncing lots of my application-specific data between Macs (Address Book, Transmit FTP sites, Yojimbo documents, passwords, and serial numbers, etc.). Barring service outages like the one this morning, Dropbox is close to knocking the iDisk off my list.
  • Murphy Mac · 1 year ago
Agreed. John - it's easy to forget the typical computer user would NEVER get their head around command line utilities.
And I don't see intuitive sharing of documents when using rsync. Am I missing something? Rsync is fine for rsync. Products like this thrive on interface.
Dropboxers - If you're watching - I'd love to feature this on my site. Hook me up!
