Congrats on going live to the general public! I've been using DropBox for about 6 months now, and it's awesome.
I'm still amazed that MobileMe doesn't allow iPhone access to the iDisk, let alone an iPhone optimized interface. Kudos to DropBox for "getting it". Can you guess who's getting my $100 next year?

Exactly how will DropBox help you with your iPhone? Did I miss someting? I see what appears to be pretty expensive to me for just a file storage service. No synching of contacts, e-mail, calendar. Just a, "DropBox" allowing limited storage of only 50GB (not paltry for sure, but limited). I don't know.
Personally I'd like to see a certain amount of storage dedicated to a workgroup and the ability to assign different people access. So I could drop stuff in one of my many dropboxes and only give certain people access.

Congrats. One tip though you really need an about page that describes your product, has some screen shots, and tells users about the feature set as well as addresses security and encryption.

Too bad the Linux client is partially binary-only crap :-(
I don't know what reasons could you possibly have to not open source the daemon too, I can only imagine there's some uber secret in there -- which makes the protocol *by definition* unsecure (that's security 101, really) and Dropbox untrustworthy. If you're offering secure storage, you ought to be able to survive peer review.
And that's on top of notorious problems with binary-only things on Linux. Color me not impressed.

Dropbox is quickly becoming a favorite app for me. I have a home office with three computers at home and 3 at work including one Mac. Keeping the files straight was an ongoing nightmare. Dropbox is helping me to tame the beast and get all of these little monsters on the same page. Thanks and the only thing I could want is one of those free 50 gig accounts to be truely content.

I watched the promo video, I took the tour, I read the FAQ, and I still have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how much storage I get when I sign up. This seems like a rather important piece of information to put on your site, I would think!
The FAQ even goes so far as to say that more storage will be available for purchase in the future, without saying how much is available free now.
I thought it might be mentioned in the forums, but I'm not allowed to even see the forums until after I've already signed up. No way to contact support -- or anybody else -- either. (Not that I blame them.)
Finally I came here, to the blog, and this post mentions in passing that free users get 2GB.
A lot of users won't bother to look that hard. And they won't bother to sign up for an online storage service that won't even tell them how much space they get.

@JJ- Not only that, but there is only one mention (almost in passing) about any type of security in use. It's not unreasonable to expect that some people will want to sync up some high-security info (aside from the standard security pics, contacts, work files, etc) and a little more info or explanation on what and how security is achieved seems necessary. It has the potential to be a great product, but right now I just can't get enough info from their site.

Thanks for developing a great product, I heard about Dropbox a few months ago on a Podcast then signed up to be notified when you releasd it on the 11th in the meantime a friend of mine tried Live Mesh and FoldeShare and and SyncToy we both believe that Dropbox is much easier to use and like you say "It Just Works" Can't wait for more storage space and take a little rest for yourself you guys deserve it.

Sorry, Dropbox is crashing for me (refuses to launch) on Mac OS 10.4.11. Console notes multiple lines of :
Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717
then files a crash log. I tried several times to launch. This is the last of the logs:

Could we get a similar scheme to nearlyfreespeech.net? Where you pay only for the storage you use. So if I need 3 gigs I wouldn't need to pay the full 9.99 a month. Ideally it would be an up-fron payment to (i.e. I give you twenty bucks, and then you put that on my account, and then it just ticks down based on my storage usage - this simplifies things for you too as you don't need to worry about missed payments etc.).

I have the exact same problem! I can't download Dropbox! It stops downloading when it reaches about 4 MBs. I am with Comcast in West Coast btw -- if that helps.

Great tool. I found nothing i actually liked that much. But there is one killer feature missing:
Support for other folders than the "dropbox" (including network shares)

A closed-source daemon to sync my data? Are you serious? Its bad enough that i don't know whats going on on your server, but i don't see any point in using a closed source daemon.
Your offering is a joke, the cheapest webhosting and some scripts who crypt my data and then use rsync over ssh is more trustworthy and useful.

When I try to run the install from the currently available download, I receive an error message that says "Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed."
I'm thinking this may be as a result of me having a few non-essential Windows XP services disabled. Is it possible to outline the services required to be active to run Dropbox?

Oh well. I was all set to go with DropBox, based on lots of praise, but the price killed the deal.
I'm no ueber-downloader or power user, but I do need a complete off-site backup for peace of mind. Since I'm gradually getting rid of my CDs, my backup will max out down the road at about 500GB, I'm estimating. (I'd like to do a complete image of my 2 drives as well.) I'm sorry to be stating the cold, hard facts, but $10/mo for 50GB is nonsense -- just way overpriced. ElephantDrive and KeepIt will do $5/mo for unlimited storage (1TB+). Their GUIs are very functional. And ED uses Amazon, which isn't going to be closing shop anytime soon.
Good luck to you guys, but I don't understand why you don't alter your revenue model to attract all the users who are clamoring for no-hassle system backups.

Could you add a 25GB plan for 49.99/year?? That would be very appealing for a lot people, including me. I just want to sync my Documents folders across 2 computers, so far I've been using my iDisk and is cumbersome to put it mildly. Many times I get this Last Sync Failed error, and more than once I had to download again all the information which can take hours.

Drop Box Guys- Just wanted to give you mad props. I'm a creative volunteer for a church in Charlotte NC. Within our all volunteer creative team we have two graphic artist, a photographer, two video editors, a film industry vetran, and a photographer.
At any given time the number of emails moving back and forth, and trying to remember who has what version of what work in progress made things quite a challenge.
Drop Box has streamlined our workflow, increased our productivity, and brought a new level of colorabation to our team.

Great product. Like many, I'm already transitioning from MobileMe to DropBox. My only "complaint" is storage. A 50 GB dropbox is great, but I'd like to see a 100 GB for $100/year. To really use the service completely, I want my music and photos in my DropBox too!

Just a quick note - the Nautilus icon really should be transparent - the white box dosen't look nice in Ubuntu 8.10.
I love this service, 50GB seems to be plenty for me and im sure most people unless you plan on sticking full length DVD videos up there?? Anyway, its great for dropping stuff off there from home to use at work :D.

I don't think "sticking" any copy protected content up is a good idea, you might get banned as you do not own the rights to that material (unless you bought it, but there is no way of proving).

I'm still amazed that MobileMe doesn't allow iPhone access to the iDisk, let alone an iPhone optimized interface. Kudos to DropBox for "getting it". Can you guess who's getting my $100 next year?
Personally I'd like to see a certain amount of storage dedicated to a workgroup and the ability to assign different people access. So I could drop stuff in one of my many dropboxes and only give certain people access.

I don't know what reasons could you possibly have to not open source the daemon too, I can only imagine there's some uber secret in there -- which makes the protocol *by definition* unsecure (that's security 101, really) and Dropbox untrustworthy. If you're offering secure storage, you ought to be able to survive peer review.
And that's on top of notorious problems with binary-only things on Linux. Color me not impressed.
I will give it a try, but I believe right now the prommissis are very good.

You've come a log way since I chatted with you about DropBox at MIT and the WebInno in Boston a few years ago. I was one of the first beta users of DropBox and I still use - happily. Really good and useful piecie of software.

I watched the promo video, I took the tour, I read the FAQ, and I still have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how much storage I get when I sign up. This seems like a rather important piece of information to put on your site, I would think!
The FAQ even goes so far as to say that more storage will be available for purchase in the future, without saying how much is available free now.
I thought it might be mentioned in the forums, but I'm not allowed to even see the forums until after I've already signed up. No way to contact support -- or anybody else -- either. (Not that I blame them.)
Finally I came here, to the blog, and this post mentions in passing that free users get 2GB.
A lot of users won't bother to look that hard. And they won't bother to sign up for an online storage service that won't even tell them how much space they get.
Not only that, but there is only one mention (almost in passing) about any type of security in use. It's not unreasonable to expect that some people will want to sync up some high-security info (aside from the standard security pics, contacts, work files, etc) and a little more info or explanation on what and how security is achieved seems necessary. It has the potential to be a great product, but right now I just can't get enough info from their site.
The connection to dropbox is secured using SSL and the data is stored encrypted using AES256

I have the exact same problem! I can't download Dropbox! It stops downloading when it reaches about 4 MBs. I am with Comcast in West Coast btw -- if that helps.

Your offering is a joke, the cheapest webhosting and some scripts who crypt my data and then use rsync over ssh is more trustworthy and useful.
When I try to run the install from the currently available download, I receive an error message that says "Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed."
I'm thinking this may be as a result of me having a few non-essential Windows XP services disabled. Is it possible to outline the services required to be active to run Dropbox?
I'm no ueber-downloader or power user, but I do need a complete off-site backup for peace of mind. Since I'm gradually getting rid of my CDs, my backup will max out down the road at about 500GB, I'm estimating. (I'd like to do a complete image of my 2 drives as well.) I'm sorry to be stating the cold, hard facts, but $10/mo for 50GB is nonsense -- just way overpriced. ElephantDrive and KeepIt will do $5/mo for unlimited storage (1TB+). Their GUIs are very functional. And ED uses Amazon, which isn't going to be closing shop anytime soon.
Good luck to you guys, but I don't understand why you don't alter your revenue model to attract all the users who are clamoring for no-hassle system backups.
Bottom line - can't get it installed. Do you have any support offered? Couldn't find a link or an email anywhere on your site.

Just wanted to give you mad props. I'm a creative volunteer for a church in Charlotte NC. Within our all volunteer creative team we have two graphic artist, a photographer, two video editors, a film industry vetran, and a photographer.
