    Dropbox > Ubuntu One
  • Benny the Irish polyglot · 2 months ago
I second that. You won't be losing this user! I'm happily on 9.10, but honestly Ubuntu One isn't nearly what Dropbox is. Keep up the good work DB team!! :)
  • emurphy77 · 2 months ago
I've helped build Ubuntu One from the first line of code, and I'd just like to say that I respect Dropbox and your team a lot. It's a fine product! Keep up the great work :)

Also, we've delberately built some of the other Ubuntu One features like the contacts database in a way to specifically enable other products/projects to integrate - making things work together is good for the end user no matter how you slice it, so I'd love to help Dropbox work with contact syncing etc. For more info, check out https://launchpad.net/desktopcouch .

    Don't forget the iphone app!

You're absolutely right! Works like a dream out of the box! Thanks!

    the links do not work...
  • HealyHQ · 2 months ago
    Are you serious?
...You don't even use Linux, do you? -_-
You're not supposed to copy those into your web browser, genius.
They go into your software repositories.

DropBox seems to be causing me numerous syncing problems with Karmic Koala. It seems to get stuck on arbitary files... these sync/lock problems are sometimes solved by restarting the program but not always.
  • Cadu · 2 months ago
Does the packages provided in the repositories integrates Dropbox with the all-new notifier-applet (the little mail icon next to the clock)?

    Thank you.
  • Locke99GS · 2 months ago
    No it does not.
  • nemolivier · 2 months ago
With a possibility to change the icon to grey it will be even better !
  • Liquen · 2 months ago
    Yes! Grey icon, please.
  • Carlos Javier · 2 months ago
    Second this! grey icon please!
  • josefnankivell · 2 months ago
A grey icon for Ubuntu would make it perfect!
  • wilsonvh · 2 months ago
You're absolutely right! Works like a dream out of the box! Thanks!
  • Cadu · 2 months ago
Sorry, think I asked the worng question.

What I meant to ask is: Does the repositories packages provides a "gray colored" tray icon, for a more consistent Ubuntu look?

    Thanks again.
  • Locke99GS · 2 months ago
It offers the same blue icon as it has in the past, though I agree they ought to offer a grey scale icon set to blend with Karmic's defaults.
  • Pedro · 2 months ago
Don't capitalize the "kamic" on teh apt sources. The correct:

    deb http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu karmic main
    deb-src http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu karmic main

    Am I right?
  • Adam · 2 months ago
    Yes, worked for me.
  • PeterAnselmo · 2 months ago
I've been using Jaunty version of Dropbox with the Karmic Beta for some time now. It's worked better than Ubuntu One did for it's own system! Good to see there's now a native Karmic Client. Go Dropbox!
  • Adam · 2 months ago
I think there might be an issue with 64bit installs. I get error on apt-get update

Failed to fetch http://linux.getdropbox.com/ubuntu/dists/Karmic... 404 Not Found

    Adam
  • Dan · 2 months ago
Like Pedro above mentioned, you have you use a lower-case k in Karmic for the lines to work. Making that change worked for me :)
  • jason · 2 months ago
in my limited experience, while ubuntu one is fine, it's no dropbox. dropbox is clearly more evolved and U1 has a long way to go. that being said, i'll probably use both just for fun. but dropbox will always be my first love in syncing storage.
  • Kellie Richardson · 2 months ago
My friend uses this and i have to say she loves it.
  • cynicaltyler · 2 months ago
It's far too rare that an app I enjoy on my Windows box works flawlessly on my Ubuntu box. I love you guys/gals.
  • honkiitong · 2 months ago
but still missing KDE integration ...
  • agerling · 2 months ago
You should actually be glad that they added a certain syncing app. I used ubuntu one for a week with my two ubuntu machines, and loved every second, so when I came to the moment when I wanted to add my Windows machines, I moved to Dropbox and it actually runs quite a bit better, and includes my Windows! Thnx!
  • BUGabundo · 2 months ago
err. it was launched last week, not two weeks ago.
and Yeah, i'm sticking with DB too :)
  • bigbrovar · 2 months ago
So you are you calling a zeolot!!! am a linux user and i use it because it works for me not cus am a zealot!!!!. just so you know. (BTW I love your product and i defo pick it ahead of Ubuntuone which lacks multi-platform support just so you know)
  • lordl · 2 months ago
Dropbox beats Ubuntu One easily! The latter is much slower to detect and update new files, and is generally slow.

Still though, I find myself using it alongside Dropbox to sync only certain files to my netbook, which can't handle all that I have backep up in Dropbox. Hoping to see a selective sync feature in Dropbox soon, so that I can use it for all my file-syncing needs :)
  • Thomas Arbs · 2 months ago
Hmm, as an idea: how about you open 2 accounts (don't know if you're supposed to, though), and let the bigger one share one folder to which the smaller one subscribes?
  • lordl · 2 months ago
The thought crossed my mind, but as it is not possible to run two instances of Dropbox at once, it's not a very practical solution. I would have to log in and out of the service when switching between them, which sort of defeats the purpose of automatic syncing - then I could do just as well with a usb thumb drive.

Furthermore, I think I read somewhere in the TOS that you're not allowed to have more than one account. Which makes sense, since people could easily get lots more than 2GB of free storage if they were allowed to open multiple accounts.
  • me · 2 months ago
nothing stops u from having one more account and have a SHARED folder with both accounts.
thats what I do, and everyone else.
  • lordl · 2 months ago
Right, I see now that I misunderstood Thomas Arbs' suggestion. My bad. Thank you for pointing out my mistake.

I've also re-read the TOS, and it seems I was mistaking about it being prohibited to have multiple accounts. Which of course makes the whole idea much more attractive!
  • Seif Sallam · 2 months ago
thats very nice that you care about the linux community.
  • Tim · 2 months ago
Unfortunately, dropbox is a nautilus plugin...
Users of Xubuntu or Kubuntu can't enjoy the full features of dropbox... I do regret that.
  • nemolivier · 2 months ago
Can’t you have all features using the command line under Xubuntu et al ?
  • Thomas Arbs · 2 months ago
Yeah right. Indeed Dropbox and Ubuntu One are at this moment sitting side-by-side on my Ubuntu desktops, and boy do I wish they were talking to each other, too. But half of my work is still in the windows world (and will be until Photoshop gets ported or I'll grock the Gimp, which is both six days after hell freezes over), so at the time of writing, Dropbox is teh winner.

Also, Dropbox's feature for the restoring of deleted files saved my butt when aforesaid attempt of synch'ing the two daemons resulted in their synch'ing to empty...
  • peblin · 2 months ago
    Works like a charm.
I'd looooove to see a decoupling between nautilus and the daemon. Would help the KUbuntu/XUbuntu guys but more importantly be super-ninja for pure CLI-power.
(I know about the workarounds but would really like this out of the box)
  • Name · 2 months ago
You are doing great! Don't worry about the "certain syncing app"... :)
I love syncing with Windows and the iPhone!
  • anlazarov · 2 months ago
Works like a charm on 9.10 even on the beta :) I love it

Windows system at work, Ubuntu at home, iPhone on the move, all synching perfectly - I love it, please don't do anything to break it.
  • Senly · 2 months ago
Haven't tested yet but doesn't seems as great as Dropbox ;-)
  • Cyril Arnaud · 2 months ago
Works perfectly for me both on Jaunty and Karmic.
When you need a syncing software for your business you need something that works without problem. I'm little bit sad that I have to use proprietary software and that's a concession I have to make.
So for the time being I'll stay with Dropbox :)
  • Max Findel · 2 months ago
Im about to install ubuntu 9.10 in a few hours, will see if all the good things they're saying about how cool Dropbox works are true! hehe Really can't live without dropbox
  • zeta · 1 month ago
Thank you guys, I've been using the 9.10 version for a few days now and it works like a charm!
  • Luke Dixon · 1 month ago
    Been working great, thanks! :)

It's a reference to Ubuntu One, by the way. http://one.ubuntu.com/. The Ubuntu service has the same pricing, but as yet has not Windows or Mac client. But it's a full open source client (unlike dropbox). Serverside is closed source (same as dropbox).

Firefox is warning me that the web of Dropbox (www.dropbox.com) is unsafe

    More info in
    http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?s...
    http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?s...

They should fix this problem because it can cause great confusion among users of the service

Where's the Android app? (Sugar sync has one <whistle>)
  • Mekk · 1 month ago
I tested Ubuntu One for a few days (even reviewed it - http://notatnik.mekk.waw.pl/archives/190-Ubuntu... - warning: Polish). Dropbox is much, much better.
    a) Conflict detection
    b) Versioning
    c) Stability
    d) Speed
    e) Interface quality, usability

The only thing Ubuntu One may have advantage at (once they stabilize) is application-aware sync (notes, bookmarks, contacts and such). But for file sync Dropbox is giant step ahead.

Regarding the app-aware sync: have you ever considered adding some kind of API?
  • uberdan · 1 month ago
Mekk, have you thought about moving any application files you need sync'ed to DropBox and creating symlinks in the application folder? Works okay for me (though not really used in anger).
  • sewmyheadon · 1 month ago
I'm a long time Linux user and Ubuntu fan and, while I've used Ubuntu One, it's obviously not as mature or feature-rich as Dropbox yet. I think it's alpha software, or beta at best.

I've had no major issues with Dropbox since I began using it on Linux well over a year ago.

Ubuntu One, on the other hand has been a consistent headache, so I've un-installed it for the time being.

I like the idea of supporting Free Software and Open Source projects, but it's really important that the tools that we use actually work consistently and reliably, so I'm sticking with Dropbox.

Thanks guys and keep up the great work!
  • jerknextdoor · 1 month ago
i wouldn't say "without any hitches!" if you run out of space on your harddrive (something I do frequently if i forget to transfer stuff to my external on my older laptop with a 35gb hdd) dropbox gets all crashy and you have to reinstall the nautilus-daemon to get it to run right again.

So, when is support for Maemo 5 and Nokia N900 coming? Please!? =)

OMG! Who is the creative on your team that thought of concept of dropbox to ubuntu as eucalyptus is to koalas.... Sheer Genius, Creative and Original. 2ndly, The complimentary artwork, cute and amazing and stays consistent with your branding. Phenomenal!

I have Dropbox in my Laptop with Ubuntu and I use it to sync my files with Windows in VirtualBox, it works great !
I also have it on my Ipod, so it cannot get any better I guess.
